Started work on a new painting with pussy willows and a spring twilight –

Wet windy fall of snow all day from a loose misty sky; windward side of trees are whitened in the morning – the grass is full of white rhythms like waves,

Ice-storm from the east – Crackle of poplar branches swayed by the wind – the fields of dead grass soon
glaring with a soft luminous silver sheen.

Maple trees in bloom — Mrs. Taylor called and said the maple sugar was ready. So after a good lunch at the Lodge, we drove down to get it. What a joy to visit their “sugar bush” —a stand of noble maples on the low flat hill with the bright March sun through the branches. Mr. Taylor waited on me— (I found him in the “boiling down” shed— I wanted to get a whiff of the odor of boiling sap, unlike any other.)
