From the age of seventeen until the end of his life, American watercolor painter Charles E. Burchfield wrote in journals that chronicled his artistic and intellectual development. These journals reveal much about his unique vision, love of nature and gift for writing. Throughout his career, Burchfield’s moods, ideas and personal critiques were recorded in thousands of journals, scraps of paper, and studies for paintings.
Burchfield reflected on the day, in some cases chastised himself with phrases like, “You are completely dead – devoid of any emotional attitude toward nature / Wake up – be bold, make bold caricatures & conventionalizations.”
Quotes like these paired with his paintings and drawings provide a unique insight to the artist and his thoughts while he created some of America’s best artwork.
