Celebrating the Arts & Culture of the Region
Buffalo, NY — On M&T Second Friday, November 8, 2024, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., the Burchfield Penney Art Center presents a rich tapestry of new exhibitions and programs that celebrate the breadth of Western New York’s cultural heritage and artistic vitality. Through a vibrant mix of historic and contemporary works, Tracing Threads Through Time: The Artwork of William C. Maggio, Wilhelmina Godfrey: I am what I am, and A Grammar of Animacy: Charles E. Burchfield & Mike Glier highlight the contributions of influential artists from the region, and underscore connections to national conversations. Alongside the exhibition openings, a special screening and panel discussion, Tales from the Porch Part IV: Art is a Language will take place in the auditorium. Visitors are invited to participate in all-ages artmaking in the Useum Studio and enjoy a beverage from the pop-up bar in the second-floor Reception Space. Thanks to the generous support of M&T Bank, admission is free on the second Friday of each month.

Burchfield (1893-1967). This masterpiece, a testament to Burchfield's unique artistic vision, has been acquired from Christie's, one of the world's leading auction houses for fine art.

Known affectionately as Mama Gail or Auntie Gail, Wells was a beloved community pillar, advocate, and leader. Born and raised in Harlem, NY, Wells moved to Buffalo to attend UB in 1967, where she was a founding member of the Black Student Union. Rita Argen Auerbach is well-known as a watercolor painter, educator, and past president of the Buffalo Society of Artists. Sadly, Rita passed away on May 18th having remained engaged with our museum just days before.

SUNY Buffalo State University — On Monday, April 8, 2024, one day before the 131st anniversary of Charles E. Burchfield’s birth, the “Great North American Eclipse” will cast Buffalo, NY in its dark umbra. The region lies directly in the Path of Totality, the perfect vantage point to witness the moon’s total eclipse of the sun. The Burchfield Penney Art Center is partnering with the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium at SUNY Buffalo State University to present a constellation of astronomy-themed exhibitions and programs.
