It was a clear, brisk day, a few scattered clouds, and with a sharp tang to the air. 

 I woke in the morning despising all mankind; fears that I was slipping again into misanthropy assailed me, but at Teegarten I found peace,

To the Big woods – painting—A bright sunny day with cool wind from the south — wander a bit in the woods to try & find a subject but without avail...

All the color in the trees is intensified in the trees in a wonderful orange, pink & purple haze-like clouds... fitted well with the spider-web glint among the trees.

In studio – made changes in the sky of yesterday’s picture – paler and more mysterious – it now seems (Bertha, who had admired it very much before, agreed) to be more of “a piece” throughout. 

Morning — half sunlight from vague misty sky. On my walk hear killdeer, red-winged blackbirds–
P.M. to head of Zoar Valley Country — 

P. M. Out Ellsworth Road, sketching – terrific high, wind looming clouds – bluebirds & singing of telegraph wires – Host of redwings while I was in a gale on a hill painting the sun & clouds —

About four o'clock this morning I woke up. Bright moonlight was streaming in the windows; I got up and looked out; it was a weird scene of ghostly moonlight, dark sky and shadowy earth.

P.M – Sunshine is imminent & immense valleys come to mind – with pale sunshine on the tops of hills & on limbs of trees close at hand-

B & I to Hepatica Hill (10 miles below Springville). A fine clear day after a frost. The country looks enchanting. Park in the usual spot, and we eagerly go up the hill...
