Snow started early evening - everything covered this morning - like the middle of winter, but at midmorning the gay song of a songsparrow...

Most of day on “Song of the Telegraph” – First east on Clinton St to get studies of telegraph poles with knot-holes in them – A dark cloudy day with strong wind of north, and occasional light snow-flurries.

Here an old deserted house + a frog pond in back - + decide to stay here. – Here there was less snow, and as the peepers were singing,

Two girls went up the street on their way from school— Their faces in the sunlight, flushed with the warmth, had a downy look, as they were outlined against the bleached out muddy road. They reminded me of hypaticas, with their pale blue & lavender dresses.

When I consider the tide of hundreds of picture ideas flooding my mind, and which will probably never get down on paper, I grow panic-stricken over the knowledge that I will die before they are born.

When I reached the harbor I was enveloped in a strange melancholy sadness that was at once painful and pleasant. I learned against the stone wall aching both physically and spiritually.

I bought a record of the St. Louis Blues (as sung by Mills Serenaders) the other day. It fills me with great satisfaction to be living in an age when such music is being born.
