Painted the memory of an incident that took place almost 60 years ago, but which seems still as vivid in my memory as the day it happened long ago.

A walk at night in the snow deep fields – the black zenith starred. A remote cheerless with far away houses against the horizon – a haze on the air –

The January gale is abroad again today – At noon the sun shines from a cold blue sky; icy roofs glow like rectangular suns; here and there a bit of ice left on the trees shine.

WINTER SOLSTICE I can nearly always, if I can get afield, find some Dandelions in December. Once I found them on New Year’s Day. I think of December as a leafless landscape, white sunlight, misty distances, & dandelions hugging the lichen-like turf.
