coming nearer, and yet I could not see the bird. Finally a Peter-bird flew by, alighting in a tree at the top of the hill. Could this be another of his songs. He drove away all doubt by tilting on a branch and repeating the song! “Peer, Peer, Peer, Peer, Peer, Peer, Peer, Peer, Peer” he sang.
Up along the lane I went, til finally it gradually disappeared. I then went down in the hollow, leapt the stream and came out on the Bottom Road. To the east, north and south lay the Bottoms, and beyond, the wooded hills, all steeped in warm sunshine. The road was muddy by now, but I managed to pick a way by tramping along soggy ice in the gutter. Just ahead was a farmhouse and barn from which came the persistent barking of a dog. When I went by, I saw the farmer standing by a horse, and his wife carefully picking her way out to him. A short distance past here is the little Swamp just below Covered Bridge. The desire to go thru it suddenly took possession of me and so, leaving the road, I went down over a hill slanting to it, and by leaping the stream that guards its outer edge, I was in the swamp.
