52. sacred place – a sombre exalted mood about it - The leaning oak seemed unchanged – the old mine’s opening all but closed. The once opened part of the south side, now over grown with saplings, the two chestnuts killed by the blight – found a wild apple.
The area between Bentleys & Farquhar’s unchanged and how good it seemed to be here again – along the south of Farquhar’s - the oak trees where I gathered acorns, still the same – I gathered some for my children.
On thru the Dutchman’s – here everything altered so much, it was almost unrecognizable. From here on it became just a country walk -.
Oct. 8 – 12, 1934 –
All children sick with intestinal flu – a busy anxious time.
Friday night Bertha to Ohio for funeral.
Oct. 14, 1934 –
Up at 5:00 A.M. To get Bertha – a happy reunion, the children all better –
Oct 20, 1934 –
Take all children but Sally for ride south of Hamburg – the colonial meeting house where we get to look over the country. Myrtle in bloom – stop at one woods where we get large mush-room like [sic] lichen off tree. Stop at another woods which had several ravines in it. The delight of the children in this place thrilled me too. It was
