Coming home at night from Travis’, I found that a Cecropia moth had emerged from one of my cocoons. After some maneuvering I coaxed it to crawl on my hand. Quivering as it clung to my finger, it gave me a strange thrill — and the beauty of nature poured in on me tenfold.

At late afternoon a dense blue haze came — the rain mist seems always new to me — what an afternoon to idle on the top of a round hill in the midst of a march —

How it all became suddenly vivid—the raw gray days in March, the calls of blue-birds, the dripping water from ice covered banks.

Yesterday I saw a robin discover a worm, and pull it out.  As he ate it, he rolled his eye skyward with intense satisfaction.

Tonight to Fields before Bentley’s – the frogs and toads – a strange rustling in the leaves – what was going on? – As I looked at the ring around the moon it became a huge opening in the sky, beyond which was another world –

The wind fluttered – grass under moonlight – pale moonlight falls on the sleeping flowers –

At Falls – Sketching – Falls a down rush of roaring froth into the dark green spruce valley – splattering into silver on the rocks – white puffs of clouds appear in the dappled sky – with wonderful rapidity they increase and rush on as if borne by some swift upper-current; from startling contrasts with sun; followed by a solid mass of clouds –

A clear brilliant sparkle of a day without a cloud. The sun shone so warm all the snow is gone except in the cool north – shadows of buildings.
