BULGER: I’ve kidded Charlie a little bit, I mean that red vest…my favorite bird is the flicker, and I accused Charlie of putting them in all these pictures, but he insists that they’re woodpeckers that he puts in his pictures. But I think…that vest…Charlie, really, I mean I give up. It’s definitely…they’re definitely woodpeckers in the pictures, I mean I can see where
MR. BURCHFIELD: May I interrupt a minute?
DR. BULGER: Yes, sure. This is your center; you can do anything you want. (Laughter)
MR. BURCHFIELD: Can you imagine the head of a college…ah…not knowing a flicker from a wood… (Laughter)
DR. BULGER: Well, you know, I can. (Laughter) Very good…I don’t know as we’d go this far and let you do anything you want to do. Can we have a meeting of the congressmen and the Mayor on this?

To Symphony Concert.  It revives the poetry in me why need it be revived?  I am anxious for a ramble in the Bottoms - then let me steep myself in its poetry - no sight of hideous city. 

A bright “boisterous” windy day, — a day like early march. It is a dangerous thing to become detached from human affairs. Sympathy should be felt for those who struggle in the pit.

Each picture, as I looked at it, became translated into the actual scene of the house itself, so that I, in truth, was the child, grown up, but being allowed a peep into a lost world.

     Already it is definitely December. Yesterday morning it was still November — fine cold misty rain out of the southwest void of gray sky, heavy oppressive pall over the earth, a feeling of something terrible about to happen. — but as the day wore on, with little wind a penetrating cold developed till by dark, snow-flurries were falling and the gnawing chill of black December filled the air.
     I regret the passing of November. November is one of the great seasons of the year. A few nights ago Frank & I were talking seasons out in front of the house, and I remarked that my three favorite months were March, August & November. As it happened they were his. Later I tried to couple other months together in like manner that both the same relation to their seasons as these three months. I should have four groups of three each, but it did not work out so. One trio I managed December, June & October – January & July went together, leaving February, April, May & September as singles.

A light snow. P.M- In studio- working on November. I am stale, and hampered by timidity- Snow-puffs on the dead goldenrod in the backlots...

 Rev. Neeb came up to discuss the roof problem for the new church. He said that he was determined to borrow the necessary extra money ($1500) and pay for it out of what he had intended to add to his weekly envelopes –
