After an evening of yard-raking and bonfires, and wild sweep of thundery skies, darkness lured me to town wanderings; down the alley by the dull evilly glaring fire remnant –
I would see our western N. Y. landscape, not in the terms of modern life (even when these are included in a painting) as exemplified by automobiles, airplanes, electricity, broad highways, modern housing and such, but rather in terms of eternal verities of the primeval earth, such as prehistoric peoples and Indians knew, which can never be erased if only we look beneath the surface —

All day on the “Presence of God in a Woods” (formerly Eye of God in a Woods) – I had to eliminate many things before I could really begin to paint –
A delightful mild day, sunshine in the morning but cloudy by noon – Hepaticas in bud (I feel sure they would have opened had the sun been out at noon. I find it hard to settle down to anything, but I transfer my drawing to the new board, and make a frame for it (to keep it from warping)
Warm and windy early in the morning, but all at once it changed and in a few moments the temperature went from 67 to 56...
