I saw a new Nature today — it was more wild — less sophisticated than the sketches I have been making.
Evie surprised us by coming in this morning at 8:00. Only half awake at first, I could hardly believe it was she was talking to Martha & Cathie. Wonderful to have her here again.
Morning is hot and misty with sullenly hot sunshine, and reminds me of a water-color I made in 1916 of a view eastward in our back-alley at home.
A good night- no coughing. A clean bright day- About noon a call from John C. – he said Valpo had definitely bought “North Woods Mood” and wanted to keep “Gateway to September”...

On the way home we reveled in a magnificent fragment of clouds stretching all along the eastern half of the sky
All day on the “Heat Lightning” — the morning spent on completing the addition of the four inches at the top, which came out well – The early part of the afternoon spent in making the change in the main thunderhead; putting the constellations and the North Star higher in the sky –
Slept until 10:00. About 11:00 to Orchard Park to get chickens and fruits and vegetables. P.M. – Too tired to begin any of the new paintings I have planned...
A quiet rainy day. It seems heavenly peaceful & quiet in the studio & back of it.
