The Model Museum brings together students with an affinity for art into meaningful conversations and real-life experiences with the Burchfield Penney Art Center staff. High school students from neighboring Buffalo Public Schools explore, learn, and expand their concepts of professional and non-professional careers that make a museum successful. They discover how a museum comes to life when people interact with art and with each other on an operational level and in service to their community.
This multiple-visit program allows high school students to experience, understand, and interpret art, prepare work for display, design and install exhibitions, manage archival records, and greet guests. Participants will gain an insider’s view of how an art museum works and the skills and education they need to enter the field. Upon completion of the eight-week program, students receive a $300.00 stipend.
Of the 80-plus graduates, all but one have inquired about the possibility of working in a museum.
"While art isn't something I'd like to pursue professionally, it's still something that brings me joy every day as I find it to be relaxing and a creative outlet. During the Model Museum Program, I was surprised by how many little details are taken into consideration so people can view the exhibits. Seeing history reflected in Burchfield’s and other artists' artwork was enjoyable too as we learned more. Being in Model Museum is something I'll always remember as I enjoyed my experience here."

"Through this program, I learned a lot about museums and how much work it takes to run one. My favorite part was exploring behind the scenes and seeing areas usually only accessible to staff. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and plan to come back in the future to see new exhibitions."
