According to the American Alliance of Museums, most museums only display about 3 percent of their collections at a time. The Burchfield Penney Art Center holds more than 12,000 objects, with new acquisitions being added to museum holdings every year. An added emphasis on showing contemporary artists from the region that the museum serves means that many works from more than half a century of collecting are not seen by visitors for decades at a time. The exhibition The Unseen features works recently acquired by the museum and works that have not been seen on the museum walls for many years.
