An authentic recreation of a corner of Charles Burchfield'sGardenville,New Yorkstudio presented for the first time objects that have been in storage at the Center since 1971. The project began with a research and planning grant from the New York State Council on the Arts in 1995 to evaluate the Center's space and collect data on other artist studio displays. A grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo provided funds from the Tekla R. Groben Bequest and the Howard C. Laverack Bequest to support both the installation and interpretive materials. The studio vignette reflects its appearance in the mid-1960s, revealing the humble environment in which the artist worked. The public also was able to see many of the art-making tools and supplies Burchfield used, his favorite inspirational objects, and the unpretentious furniture and plywood storage bins that formed his comfortable work site.
