Celebrating Nature’s Color II, Photographs by Stanford Lipsey was an exhibition of thirty-three landscape images which opened Sunday, October 6 in the then Burchfield Art Center on the campus of the State University College at Buffalo. It continued through November 17. Lipsey's Ekta color photographs are depictions of scenes in the American Rocky Mountains, the Adirondack Mountains of New York State and locations in and around Buffalo. They were made between 1978 and 1985.
Lipsey was the publisher of the Buffalo News. This was the first Buffalo showing of his photographs.
Lipsey's "second career" as a photographer began in high school in Omaha, where he was his school's newspaper photographer, and it continued at the University of Michigan, where he was the photography editor of the yearbook. In Omaha, he was a writer, editor, designer and finally owner of The Sun Newspapers of Omaha, a respected group of weekly newspapers distinguished by numerous national awards, including a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting.
In 1969, Lipsey sold the papers to Warren Buffet, an Omaha investor who later purchased The Buffalo News. Lipsey came to The News in 1977 serving as consultant, vice-chairman and chief operating officer. He became publisher and president of The News in 1983.
Photography for Lipsey was a different investigative pursuit, and as in newspapers, the matter of timing - capturing the moment - is most significant. "In my photographs, the question is not what, who or why, but when," Lipsey said. His photographs are marked by their declarative composition and careful observation of color. Through simplified forms and keenly balanced hue, his images infer the connotative truths of nature more than put forth the details of a setting.
The exhibition was selected by Dr. Edna M. Lindemann, who retired August 31 as director of the Burchfield Art Center. The Burchfield Art Center was then located on the west side of the Rockwell Hall quadrangle in temporary quarters of the College's old gymnasium. Lipsey discussed his work during a Tuesday lunch talk, -October 15 at 12:30 p.m. entitled "Publisher and Photographer."
