The Burchfield Penney Art Center closed its doors on March 16, 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic that has interrupted lives all around the world. On May 25, 2020 George Floyd was killed by police officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota escalating an anti-racist Black Lives Matter movement that was already growing, and sparking protests in cities across the United States. As we prepared to open the museum again, a team of seven members of the museum's staff collaboratively curated an exhibition to address the changing environment. Works sourced primarily from the museum's collection are featured in the museum's East Gallery in What's Going On, an exhibition conceived as a response to the difficult times we are living in.
