Jesse Walp, recipient of the 2014 Langley Kenzie Award, creates organic sculptural forms in various species of wood. The works in Ripe, though not representational, are derived directly from various organisms in different stages of development. These fantastic, playful shapes suggest that through the artist’s language we are witnessing the birth of something new, but his is work is less a brave new world than it is a glimpse into a non-threatening primordial stew.
