Museums across the country are recognizing the centennial of women’s victory in gaining the right to vote after an arduous battle for equality in a patriarchal society. Equality in all aspects of our society remains a long, hard battle even when legislation exists to empower and protect women. The art world has been no exception. Women artists often struggle for recognition and opportunities to share their art. 2020 provides the perfect opportunity for museums to exhibit work from their collections by women artists. The Burchfield Penney Art Center will present the art of women artists in several exhibitions this year. This exhibition focuses on a selection of artworks in a range of media that have been acquired in the past 5 years to demonstrate the diversity of ideas and aesthetics employed by this formidable community of women artists associated with Western New York State. Many works are being shown for the first time since their acquisition.
