This exhibition transformed a 30-year old tradition of a curated, biennial Western New York artists’ exhibition known as “In Western New York” (at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery) into a collaborative series of exhibitions presented contiguously by 12 regional museums and art galleries. The Burchfield Penney Art Center joined the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Big Orbit Gallery, Buffalo Arts Studio, Carnegie Art Center, Castellani Art Museum, CEPA Gallery, El Museo Francisco Oller y Diego Rivera, Hallwalls Center for Contemporary Art, Langston Hughes Institute, Squeaky Wheel, UB Anderson Gallery, and UB Art Gallery in Beyond/In Western New York 2005.
Artists were chosen from a prodigious volume of submissions representing more than 700 artists from Southern Ontario, Northeastern Ohio, Northwestern Pennsylvania, and Western and Central New York. The Burchfield Penney Art Center presented the work of 12 Western New York artists: Marc Böhlen, Tony Conrad, William Y. Cooper, Ron Ehmke, Jackie Felix, Meg Knowles, Jody Lafond, Aaron Miller, Joe Miller, Jim Morris, Jamie O’Neil and Alfonso Volo. In addition to painting, drawing and mixed media work, the exhibition included video, performances, and a sound installation. The Burchfield Penney, as well as many other sites, featured a video projection by John Knecht.
Beyond / In Western New York 2005 was made possible through the generous support of Judge and Mrs. John T. Elfvin, Northtown Automotive and The Baird Foundation. Additional support was provided by Consulate General of Canada, Buffalo/Consulat général du Canada, Buffalo, Hadley Exhibits Inc., M&T Bank, Lumsden and McCormick LLP, The Premier Group, and an anonymous donor. All exhibitions were open to the public by April 15; however, opening receptions were staggered over a period of three weeks to facilitate visitors.
