Excerpt from College News Service press release:
"More than 70 American paintings from the 1850-1920 period have been selected from a private Western New York collection for an exhibition, "Recognizing the Painterly Tradition in American Art", which opens Sunday, March 30, at the Burchfield Center of Buffalo State College, 1300 Elmwood Ave.
The artists, predominantly American Impressionists, include William Trost Richards, Thomas Sully, Thomas P. Rossiter, J. Francis Murphy, Emil Carlsen, Thomas Eakins, Ralph Blakelock, and Alexander Wyant. The owners of the collection have chosen to remain anonymous, but the catalog essay suggests ways in which the psychology of the collector influences selection and results in a recognition of painterly achievement very different from that reflected by a museum collection."
