Language of Clay features ten accomplished artists working in the ancient medium of clay. The variety of personal statements accompanied by technical expertise is characteristic of what clay artists are doing in America today. This activity is directly related to the extensive university and professional training programs that exist not only in New York State, but throughout the country. It is, however, significant that New York State holds a pioneer position with Alfred University, recognized as one of the first schools in America to have had such a program.
Although Language of Clay is limited to ten artists, it is an impressive exhibition which illustrates the exciting possibilities of the medium. -- Paul J. Smith, Director, Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York City, March, 1979
The ten artists--many of whom have Western New York roots, include Elisa d'Arrigo, Lynda Grimm, Wayne Higby, Margie Hughto, James D. Makins, Gail McCarthy, Tom Spleth, Bill Stewart, Robert Turner, and Frans Wildenhain.
