20,000 Crickets was a sound and light installation by Tom Kostusiak, based on a series of recordings he made from 2005 through 2008 at various locations in Western New York. The artist created an environment using suspended branches and multiple video projectors to simulate the cricket’s natural habitat. Multi-Channel sound playback portraedy the poly-rhythmic nature song of these sonic creatures. Kostusiak chose to record crickets in homage to Charles E. Burchfield, who used crickets in many of his paintings. He also included video projections of crickets by Jeff Proctor.
