Milton Rogovin reflected, "I began the photography for the MinersSeries in Appalachia in 1962 and returned to the mining area over nine summers. In 1983 my work continued with funding from the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Award for Humanistic Photography. With this grant I decided to expand the Miners Series to include miners of China, Scotland, France, Spain, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Germany, and the United States. Whenever possible I tried to show the workers, both men and women, at work as well as at home with their families."
Chronologically, the series began with France in 1981 and continued as follows: Scotland, 1982; Germany, 1984; China, 1986; Mexico, 1988; Zimbabwe and Cuba, 1989; and Czechoslovakia, 1990.
