Sangster’s Niagara: Original drawings and watercolors for the 1886 etching folio & the chine colle etching process
It has been 135 years since Amos W. Sangster (Canadian-American, 1833-1904) began studies for his monumental endeavor to illustrate the Niagara River with etchings. From 1879 through the first half of the 1880's, Sangster began working on a collection of original drawings and watercolors on which he would base his series of etchings entitled Niagara River from Lake to Lake.
This limited edition signed and numbered Remarque folio edition was one of the greatest publishing feats undertaken in the United States at that time. It was an ambitious project that documented the entire length of the Niagara River region along its thirty-six mile stretch, serving as an important historic record of the region in the late 1800’s. The entire project was a decade in the making, the copper etchings alone taking him about three years to produce.
