This month, join us for an exciting series of five workshops at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, each focused on a different theme of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). Inspired by the works and methods of Leonardo da Vinci and Charles E. Burchfield, these hands-on art-making sessions will explore the intersection of art and science. Each workshop will guide participants through a creative project that connects to the legacies of these two remarkable artists.
This series is part of Buffalo Toronto Public Media’s (BTPM) local engagement initiative around the upcoming Ken Burns film, Leonardo da Vinci. BTPM and community partners The Burchfield Penney Art Center, The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System, The Foundry, The Buffalo Museum of Science, and The Buffalo AKG Art Museum, will co-host local activities and discussions around da Vinci’s influence as an artist, inventor, and scientist. Leonardo da Vinci premieres November 18 & 19.
Students will learn about one-point perspective, a technique used to create the illusion of depth and space in art. Leonardo da Vinci mastered this technique in his architectural and anatomical drawings, demonstrating his understanding of geometry and proportion. Charles Burchfield also used perspective to add depth to his landscapes. Participants will apply these principles to their sketchbooks, creating drawings that showcase their understanding of perspective, structure, and the mathematical precision that underlies excellent art.
Open Studio at the Burchfield Penney Art Center is a drop-in workshop on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. Each month, explore and experiment with various art materials and techniques guided by Museum Educator Michaela Worosz.
