Open Studio

This month, join us for an exciting series of five workshops at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, each focused on a different theme of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). Inspired by the works and methods of Leonardo da Vinci and Charles E. Burchfield, these hands-on art-making sessions will explore the intersection of art and science. Each workshop will guide participants through a creative project that connects to the legacies of these two remarkable artists.

This series is part of Buffalo Toronto Public Media’s (BTPM) local engagement initiative around the upcoming Ken Burns film, Leonardo da Vinci. BTPM and community partners The Burchfield Penney Art Center, The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System, The Foundry, The Buffalo Museum of Science, and The Buffalo AKG Art Museum, will co-host local activities and discussions around da Vinci’s influence as an artist, inventor, and scientist. Leonardo da Vinci premieres November 18th & 19th 2024.

Engineering: Kite Creations

Participants will design and construct functional kites using paper and other simple materials. This project draws inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci's studies of flight, including his sketches of flying machines and his understanding of aerodynamics. Similarly, Charles Burchfield's keen observations of nature, particularly the sky and weather, provide a connection through his atmospheric landscapes. Students will experience the joy of engineering and design by creating and flying their kites, just as these two artists explored the principles of flight and the natural world.

ABOUT OPEN STUDIO

Open Studio at the Burchfield Penney Art Center is a drop-in workshop on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. Each month, explore and experiment with various art materials and techniques guided by Museum Educator Michaela Worosz.

Open Studio welcomes individuals of all ages and skill levels to join the fun and express their creativity. Each month, we will delve into a new theme and art material, allowing you to expand your artistic knowledge and skillset. Each creative theme project is designed to complement the current exhibitions within the museum and the colors, shapes, and textures of the Usuem Studio. Whether you are an experienced artist or a beginner, our Open Studio is the perfect place to learn, create, and connect with other like-minded individuals in a relaxed and supportive environment.

No registration is required. Drop-in anytime between 10:30 am and 4:00 pm.

August's Open Studios are free to the public. Admission is required to visit the galleries.
