In 2007, when I started LehrerDance here in Buffalo, my goal was to put the city on the national dance map and make Buffalo a destination city for professional dancers, not a departure city. Typically, young dancers who train here, both at local dance studios and universities , have to leave to find work as a professional dancer. One of the ways to accomplish these goals, is to provide opportunities for up and coming choreographers and dancers to showcase their work in Buffalo. Through my new position as Dance Curator at Burchfield Penney Art Center, I can do just that. The Burchfield Penney has provided me the opportunitie to bring dancers and choreographers to their space in order to create new and exciting art.
On August 14, I will be presenting my second dance curation in the Front Yard. For this work, I have chosen local choreographer and professor of dance at UB, Anne Burnidge and her dance company, Anne Burnidge Dance. Through her eclectic choreography, Anne creates work that explores the complex and sensitive nature of human relationships though kinetically driven movement. The company is full of dance artists who truly understand the importance of collaboration, as each performer is an integral part of the creative process. Anne Burnidge Dance will perform on the Front Lawn to live music by BuffFluxus performing “Resounding Roar”. The experiential nature of BuffFluxus combined with the clarity, deliberateness, and conviction of Anne’s work will give the audience a glimpse into the power of combining live music and dance and the mutable nature of such a collaboration.
In the evening portion of the event, LehrerDance will perform their trademark athletic, artistic, and accessible dance inside the Burchfield Penney. The works will be live fed out to the Front Yard, giving audiences a chance to see the company either up close and personal inside or larger than life outside. After the performance, a talk back session will occur with myself and the company, giving audience members a chance to give their impression of seeing LehrerDance in this unique way.
It is my hope that through these dance curations, more local professional choreographers and dancers will be able to showcase their work, gaining that valuable experience that will lead to further creation, performance, and development of the Buffalo dance scene.
