Wilhelmina Godfrey (1914-1994), Face Fetish, c. 1970, wool, glass, wood and plastic beads, polyester, stuffing, metal rod, 42 1/2 x 14 1/4 x 1 1/4 inches, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Gift of Carol and Emanuel Parzen, 2009
Inspired by Wilhelmina Godfrey’s Face Fetish (1914-1994) currently on exhibit in the Woven and Stitched exhibition, this hands-on workshop invites participants to explore the art of portraiture through the medium of fabric. Using a variety of textures, patterns, and fabric configurations, participants will create a unique and tactile interpretation of a face. The portrait could have multiple dimensions, perhaps a two-sided face, or even a three-dimensional representation. You might choose to capture yourself at a different time in your life, or a loved one exploring how their identity can be expressed through the fibers that make up the portrait. This workshop offers a chance to engage in an exploration using materials while blending art and storytelling through fabric. No prior sewing experience is required. All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring any fabrics or materials that hold personal meaning to you.
