How do we investigate our personal connections with words? Participants will discover interior relationships with words by challenging ideas of "correctness". In Bending Language, we will be experimenting with joining and fragmenting letterforms and deconstructing words to find hidden meanings.
Nicole Chochrek is an interdisciplinary artist utilizing visual and performative frameworks to explore contemporary issues and environmental disparities. In 2014 she graduated from The University of North Texas with a bachelor's in Geography: Environmental Science. From 2015-to 2017 she helped establish Puppets for The Planet, a satirical puppet troupe that toured across North Texas. Her practice has been influenced by living and working with Alicia Eggert in Denton, Texas, and Porto, Portugal from 2017-to 2019. She has done residencies with Laboratory Art + Residency and Window Dressing in Spokane, Washington, and UB’s Arts Collaboratory in Buffalo, New York. She has presented her research through the National Creative Placemaking Leadership Summit in Phoenix, Arizona. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally from Al Shaheed Park in Kuwait to El Museo Francisco Oller y Diego Rivera Gallery in Buffalo, New York. In 2020 Nicole attended the University at Buffalo on full scholarship with a GA/TA position. She received the Arthur A. Schomburg Scholarship as part of UB’s Presidential Fellowship Program in 2020 and the Frances R. and Louis B. Morrison Memorial Scholarship in 2021. She will graduate this Spring with an MFA in Studio Art from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
