May NFWS Demonstration by Workshop Artist Susan Webb Tregay!

Join the Niagara Fronteir Watercolor Society as they welcome Susan Webb Tregay back to Buffalo. An award winning artist and beloved teacher, Susan now resides in North Carolina. She is a signature member of NWS, TWSA, the Watercolor USA Honor Society, as well as the author of Master Disaster, Five Ways to Rescue Desperate Watercolors [North Light, 2007, book and DVD] and numerous articles. Her paintings have been accepted into two consecutive America Watercolor Society exhibitions. Her 2014 entry won a prestigious award, was chosen for the traveling exhibition and was featured in the AWS review in Gallery & Studio Magazine. Her current series of paintings,

“Once Upon a Time there were Free-Range Children,” has been featured in two solo museum exhibitions, and has been supported by grants from the NC Council of the Arts. She offers the following description of her demonstration:

"DEVELOPING YOUR OWN STYLE"
"One lesson that I learned from taking a NFWS workshop years ago has structured my art ever since. I was responsible for escorting the instructor, Marilyn Hughey Phyllis, around to the Albright and other galleries. After a long day of teaching she would stand in front of a single painting for 5 minutes before moving on to the next. Exhausted, I finally asked her what she was looking for in these paintings, and she said “three things.” 1. What challenge did the artist set for herself? 2. Did she meet that challenge? And 4. How can I use that challenge to improve my own work?

With my lecture and demo, I will show you how I weeded through dozens of influences in order to find the ones that resonated with me, and then applied them to my acrylic (horrors!) paintings.
The question then became, how to turn the screw one more time and take my acrylic style and use it with my two other passions, watercolor and plein air painting. My demo will show you what I have come up with so far, as well as some tricks that I depend on every day and hope you will love too."
