Twenty-five years ago, this past spring, the worst act of homegrown terrorism in the nation’s history was committed, On the morning of April 19, 1995, an ex-Army soldier named Timothy McVeigh parked a rented Ryder truck in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. At 9:02 am a bomb exploded and Timothy McVeigh committed mass murder, killing 168 people, including many children, and injuring more than 680 others.
Please join us on Thursday, January 7th at 6:30 pm as the Book Club at The Center hosts the Buffalo News journalists Lou Michel and Dan Herbeck, authors of American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City Bombing, the only authorized biography of the Oklahoma City Bomber written by the only reporters who interviewed McVeigh directly.
While the motive still remains a mystery, prior to his execution the remorseless McVeigh, spoke for over 75 hours to Michel and Herbeck - sharing why he chose the Murrah building, the lack of sympathy felt for the death of the children, and what the message he hoped the inhumane carnage he was responsible for would send to Americans. Now Lou Michel and Can Herbeck will share with us the experience of meeting a monster.
