George Toles is a screenwriter and educator who was born in Buffalo, N.Y. As a filmmaker, he is best known for his longtime collaboration with Canadian director/co-writer Guy Maddin; together they have worked on the screenplays of more than half a dozen motion pictures, including Careful (1992), The Saddest Music in the World (2003), and My Winnipeg (2007).
Toles received a BA summa cum laude from the University of Buffalo and an MA and PhD from the University of Virginia. He is a distinguished professor of English and chair of Film Studies at the University of Manitoba, and the author of A House Made of Light: Essays on the Art of Film (2001).
George Toles is the brother of editorial cartoonist Tom Toles.
