Xiaowen Chen was born in Dailan, China. In 1982 he recieved his BFA from Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in China. In 1987, he moved to the United States and recieved his MFA in Printmaking from Illinois State University five years later. Xiaowen Chen has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in the United States and China and has taught at art and design institutions around the world. He has taken part in numerous artist residencies and visiting artist positions throughout the US and China. In 1996 he was hired as Professor at the New York State College of Ceramics at the School of Art and Design at Alfred University; in 2009 he became the Chair of the Division of Expanded Media at NYSCC.
"In addition to [Xiaowen Chen's] studio practice [he] has become more involved with a number of other professional activities, including writing, organizing exhibitions, making video documentary for television, and establishing scholarships for students to study in China. He works with many mediums such as painting, drawing, printmaking, digital processing, as well as video installation.
His works have been featured in many university galleries and museums including the China National Museum of Art in Beijing, Indiana Museum of Art and Science in Evanston, Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art in Ithaca, Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in Santa Barbara."[1]
