Valia Oliver is a visual artist and arts educator. She received a BFA in painting from the Memphis College of Art in 1977 and an MFA in painting from SUNY Buffalo in 1986. During her time in Buffalo , N.Y. (1983-1988) her work was shown in exhibitions at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Burchfield Art Center, Nina Freudenheim Gallery, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, and other venues; and she taught as an adjunct instructor at the University at Buffalo, the Western New York Institute for the Arts in Education at Buffalo State College, and at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. She also served on the Artists Advisory Board of Hallwalls and the board of directors of Artists Gallery of WNY.
Oliver subsequently lived, worked, and exhibited in New York City, Carbondale, Ill., and other cities throughout the U.S. Since the year 2000 she has been based in Memphis, Tenn. She is married to fellow painter and educator Jed Jackson. For more information on her work, visit valiaoliver.com.
