"With her photography students as models, in this work [Untitled series, 1994], Shkauna Frischkorn revives the use of gum bichromate, an early photographic process that employs pigment rather than silver. Several printings of each image are required to get the rich, deep tones of these monochromatic prints. With their attractive young subjects shown in tight close-up, these pictures seem almost to be details of classical statuary, were it not for the sharp focus on hair, pores, and the texture of skin. The tension Frischkorn sets up between idealiation and realism, along wit the astonishing contemporary look and resolution she wrestles from a now=antique method, provides a level of satisfaction that is uncommon in similar portraiture."--In Western New York 1995, Albright-Knox Art Gallery
