Robert Kaupelis (1928-2009) was a painter, teacher, and author of painting books. Born in Amsterdam, New York, Kaupelis studied at the State University College in Buffalo where he received a Bachelor of Science. He also studied at the Albright Art School in Buffalo and Teachers College at Columbia University, earning M. A. and Ed. D. degrees. He served as a professor of art at New York University from 1956 to 1985. His work is in several museums, and he exhibited at numerous galleries, especially in the South. Kaupelis was a board member of Silvermine Guild Arts Center in New Canaan, CT. His art received awards and prizes, including "Sculpture New England Annual" 1969 and "Painting 1973" at Silvermine. He was referenced in the August 1981 issue of American Artist. In 2005, the Buffalo State College presented Kaupelis with a Distinguished Alumni award.
