Richard Harrington

Richard Harrington is a painter and printmaker based in South Lima, New York. Born in Hillsboro, Oregon, he spent many of his formative years in the Northwest before relocating with his family to Western New York as a teenager. An avid fisherman from an early age, Harrington graduated from the State University of New York at Geneseo in 1982 with a double major in studio art and business. In due time, his interests in art and nature began to intersect, and after an apprenticeship with the painter Richard Beale he discovered his calling as a visual artist whose subject matter was to be found in the great outdoors. He also cites authors Barry Lopez, Richard Nelson, and Hugh Brody, among others, as inspirations. [1]

In an artist’s statement, Harrington has observed: “In a culture that increasingly separates us from the natural world, my interest is in how we relate to it, how it lives in our minds and memories, and can provide a sense of belonging, of connection, of home.”

Harrington’s work has been included in shows at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center (Auburn, N.Y.), the Arnot Museum (Elmira, N.Y.), the Pearce Museum (Corsicana, Tex.), and the Memorial Art Gallery (Rochester, N.Y.), among others.
