Peter Weibel is a media artist, educator, theorist, and curator. His work, sometimes in collaboration with Valie Export, includes experimental film, expanded cinema, video and audio art, digital art, conceptual art, and performance and often explores intersections of aesthetics and science.
Weibel was born in Odessa, Russia and raised in Austria. He studied literature, French, medicine, logic, philosophy, and cinematography in Paris and Vienna, and wrote his doctoral thesis on mathematical logic. Since 1976 he has lectured and taught at universities throughout the world, including a five-year appointment at the State University of New York at Buffalo from 1984 to 1989. While there, he established a Digital Arts Laboratory.
Among the many venues for which Weibel has curated screenings and exhibitions are Neue Galerie in Graz, Austria; Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria; and the ZKM/center for Art and ZMedia in Karlsruhe, Germany. He has written and edited several influential books about media.
