Michelle Bae-Dimitriadis

Michelle Bae-Dimitriadis is an associate professor of art education at SUNY Buffalo State. She taught K-12, undergraduate and graduate levels in visual arts education prior to her appointment at Buffalo State. She received her Ph.D. in art education at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2009 and served as a visiting assistant professor at the same school before joining Buffalo State. She is a recipient of the 2010-2011 SUNY Faculty Diversity and Educational Equity Program research award.

Her research interests include children and youth digital media culture, globalization and multicultural art, contemporary art practice and community art, as well as feminist art and pedagogy. Her interdisciplinary approach to research informs her teaching in new media technology, contemporary visual culture and art theory and practice, as well as feminist art and criticism. Through her teaching, she has worked to bring Buffalo State students into the local community to engage in community-based art and media teaching practices. Much of this work has been with refugee youth communities on the West Side of Buffalo.

She has presented her research in numerous international, national, and local conferences such as the National Art Education Association conference (NAEA), the International Society of Education through Art (INSEA), the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry, the Bergamo Conference on Curriculum Theory and Practice, the International Early Childhood Conference, the International Girlhood Conference, and the Nordic Digital Youth Culture Conference in Tallin, Estonia. Her publications include Girls, Cultural Productions, and Resistance (co-edited with Olga Ivashkevich) (2012, Peter Lang). She has published several chapters and peer-review journal articles in the field of art education, education, and women and gender studies.
