Hungarian-born painter Magda Cordell McHale was known as a major figure in post-WWII British art. In the 1950’s she was a founding member of a closely knit, London-based group of artists, writers, and architects known as the Independent Group, whose philosophy it was to overcome the differences between life and art. McHale did this through abstracting the human figure.
McHale, in a 1993 essay, referred to culture as a “fluid continuum” and suggested that “the visionary poetry of our period or its symphonic equivalent is as likely to be found on MTV, or in the annual report of a major company.” (NW)
