Ken Root Jr. is an artist who currently resides in Buffalo, New York. Root was born and raised in the area, and is the fourth generation to call western New York home. He has a degree in Design from the State University of New York College at Buffalo. Formerly a graphic artist, he now works in the construction and restoration field. His connection to Buffalo's historic architecture extends decades, and asserts itself in surprising ways. "In 1986 I created a calendar/poster set that took a lighthearted look at Buffalo's history. I included many references to Buffalo's wonderful architecture. I never expected that 20 years later I would be helping to restore some of these architectural gems, including the Darwin Martin House." (Root Jr.)
The western New York region continues to inspire Ken Root Jr. "I have always been inspired by the urban landscape of Western New York. With the cityscapes that I create from wood and found objects I've discovered a way to share that inspiration. I enjoy the challenge of creating a compelling piece of art from unusual or unexpected materials. I am often suprised to find how an object "works"in a composition. For instance, a worn brass doorknob can also be a setting sun. This approach invites the viewer to stretch their imagination and join in the fun. I feel I have succeeded in my art when the subject and materials mesh together to create a sense of place, a sense of whimsy and a sense of wonder." (Root Jr.)
