Kathie Simonds is a Western New York painter and mixed media artist. A former teacher at the Buffalo Seminary, she has been a practicing artist and teacher for decades, exhibiting her art in Hallwalls, the Artists Gallery, Burchfield Art Center, Albright-Knox Art Gallery (In Western New York 1983 and 40th WNY Exhibition in 1984), and other Buffalo venues. The Duns Scotus Gallery of Daemen College presented a solo installation of her multiples in 1982. Simonds collaborated with Billie Lawless on the infamous sculpture, Green Lightning, which was installed in the Elm-Oak Arterial briefly in 1984 before Mayor Griffin declared it obscene and had the commissioned work removed. (Simonds collaborated with Lawless on the painted panels of the sculpture that were ignored once people focused on the phallic neon “dancing dog bone” figure.
