Joshua Mangis With grew up 45 minutes west of Chicago and moved to Buffalo in 2016 to be with his now-wife, who is a Buffalo native.
With holds a BA in Community Art from Wheaton College and is passionate about making art that engages people both inside and outside the traditional gallery audience and setting. With’s personal practice is centered in sculpture and percussion. His community experience includes work on commissioned group mural, mosaic, and quilt projects, organizing group exhibitions and gallery-campus relations, coordinating visuals and a participatory installation for a sexual assault prevention campaign, and teaching youth percussion/music classes.
As his social and personal practice engages community at varying levels, he strives to make art that is responsible and accountable to its community. His work often focuses on issues of health, healing, self-care, and vulnerability. He is particularly drawn to working with pill bottles because while prescription medication can be a very heavy and provocative topic for many, it is an ordinary reality in his life as someone with two chronic illnesses. He believes creating is an inherently vulnerable act, and the success of his work is dependent on his ability to implicate himself in the work. If you care about people, community, art, or if you are breathing, he would likely love to work with you.
