(b. 1952)
George Campos is a photographer and the president of the Campos Group in Tonawanda, one of the largest photography businesses in Western New York.
Campos came to the United States from Cuba as a child in 1961 and grew up in Buffalo, where he received his BA in economics from SUNY Buffalo before turning to photography as a career in the mid 1970s. In 1979 he formed Campos Photography Center, Inc., which originally offered darkroom rental facilities to professional photographers and evolved through the years into a full service custom lab.
Campos was a featured artist in the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s 2005 exhibition Art on the Hyphen: Cuban-American Art in Western New York State. Of his work in the show, guest curator Lynette M. F. Bosch wrote:
“... Campos records his family’s past and present and his experience of living in Buffalo. As such Campos’s photographs take us to worlds that have been and continue to be defined by the daily rituals of family life. Contemplated metaphorically, the Campos family becomes a metonymic substitute for our family and for that of every other family to which we are linked through birth or marriage. Specific and universal, these photographs record a history that has passed and a reality that is constantly changing.” [1]
Campos has served on the Council of the Burchfield Penney Art Center and on the Advisory Board of CEPA Gallery.
