Studio potter Frederick Emery Walrath studied with Charles Fergus Binns at the School of Clay-Working and Ceramics at Alfred University in Alfred, New York from 1901-1903. He subsequently taught at the Chautauqua Institution and the University of Chicago’s School of Education. In 1907 he moved to Boston, Massachusetts to develop glaze formulas for the Grueby Faience Company. The following year, he moved to Rochester,New York to teach at the Mechanics Institute. In 1918 he was hired as chief ceramic chemist at Newcomb Pottery in New Orleans.His ceramics are characterized by subtle conventionalized floral motifs on matte-glazed pottery. His work was awarded a bronze medal at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louisand displayed at a 1909 arts and crafts exhibition in Buffalo.
