David Plowden

Artist David Plowden graduated from Yale College in 1955 and later studied with photographer Minor White.  Plowden has written and illustrated many books, often concentrating on images of the American Midwest, including Small Town America.  His photographs have been published in dozens of periodicals including American Heritage American Photographer, Audubon, Fortune, Life, Modern Photography, Newsweek, Smithsonian, and Time.  The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, which is part of the Yale University Library, acquired Plowden’s archive in 1995.  His photographs have been exhibited in such prestigious museums as the Art Institute of Chicago, International Center of Photography, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, National Museum of American Histosry, and the Kunstmuseum, Luzern, Switzerland.  Among the major institutions that represent his work in their collections are the Art Institute, Center for Creative Photography, Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution.
