American
Born: Buffalo, N.Y., U.S.
David Gracon is a video maker, media activist, and scholar. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he completed his BA and MA at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) in Media Studies and Sociology and his PhD in Communication and Society at the University of Oregon. He is an assistant professor in the department of communication studies at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill. [1]
Gracon has long been interested—as both an observer and a participant—in such DIY endeavors as post-punk, indie, and experimental music scenes; zine communities; college radio; and activist oriented experimental media communities and collectives.
In 2009 he co-curated (with Julie Perini and Marc Moscato) Tuff Stuff from the Buff, a program of film and video by Buffalo artists, and toured it around the Pacific Northwest by bicycle. In the fall of 2012, he completed his first feature-length documentary, Walls of Sound—A Look Inside the House of Records, a look at an independent record store in Eugene, Oregon.
