D. Kenneth Winebrenner (1909-1975) was one of the founders of the Charles Burchfield Center, created in Rockwell Hall on the campus of Buffalo State University College on December 9, 1966. College President Paul G. Bulger appointed him to be chairman of the governing advisory committee at the same time that he appointed Edna M. Lindemann to be the museum curator (and later director). Dr. Winebrenner was an art educator at the college, jewelry designer, craftsman, and newspaper writer, editor, and critic. He also was a founder of the Buffalo Craftsmen, Inc., and the Associated Art Organizations of Western New York. After his death in 1975, Dr. Lindemann dedicated the exhibition Language of Wood and its catalogue to D. Kenneth Winebrenner “as token of our esteem and with humble gratitude for the rich legacy he left us.”
