Courtney Grim is a media artist and educator based in Buffalo, N.Y. She holds a BFA from Ohio University in photography and an MFA degree from Rochester Institute of Technology in imaging arts. She is an associate professor in the Humanities department at Medaille College.
Grim’s work often incorporates photography, digital imaging, film and video, site-specific installation, and non-traditional paintings to explore themes including surveillance, privacy, environmental issues, historical preservation, and consumerism. Her work has been seen in traditional gallery settings, public art venues, and screening rooms, as well as in such non-traditional performance and exhibition spaces as hotels and warehouses. Grim's projects have been installed, screened, and exhibited at festivals and venues throughout the country, including the Sound Experiment Film Festival in Laredo, Tex.; the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center in Philadelphia, Penn.; Richmond Center for the Visual Arts, Kalamazoo, Mich.; American Cinematic Experience, New York, N.Y.; the Athens International Film and Video Festival in Athens, Ohio; and the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center in Owego, N.Y. and was awarded an Individual Artists Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.
Grim is an active participant in the Western New York media community, including serving on the Board of Directors at Squeaky Wheel/Buffalo Media Resources. She is a recipient of Business First’s Forty Under 40 award (2001) for community service in the arts; the Burchfield-Penney Art Center’s Emerging Artists Award (2000); and several professional development grants from Medaille College (2006-2012).
